Medicare Expands Access to GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications Beginning July 1, 2026

Revised on May 11, 2026

For years, many Medicare beneficiaries have asked us this important question:

“Why doesn’t Medicare cover weight loss medications like Wegovy or Zepbound?”

Beginning July 1, 2026, the answer to that question is starting to change.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced a new temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, designed to help eligible Medicare beneficiaries access certain GLP-1 medications at a significantly lower cost.

This is one of the most significant Medicare coverage developments we’ve seen related to obesity and metabolic health.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 medications are a class of prescription drugs originally developed to help manage Type 2 diabetes. Over time, they’ve also been shown to help many patients with:

  • Weight management
  • Cardiovascular risk reduction
  • Blood sugar control
  • Metabolic health improvement

Some of the most recognized GLP-1 medications include:

  • Wegovy®
  • Zepbound®
  • Ozempic®
  • Mounjaro®

Until now, Medicare generally only covered these medications when prescribed for conditions such as diabetes or certain cardiovascular diagnoses — not solely for weight loss.

What Is Changing on July 1, 2026?

CMS is launching a nationwide temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge.

Under this program, eligible Medicare beneficiaries may be able to obtain certain GLP-1 medications for approximately $50 per month

The program is currently scheduled to run through December 31, 2027.

Which Medications Are Included?

According to CMS, the following medications/formulations are expected to be available through the program:

  • All formulations of Wegovy®
  • All formulations of Foundayo®
  • The KwikPen® formulation of Zepbound®

Certain other formulations may not qualify.

Who May Be Eligible?

While CMS continues to release additional guidance, eligibility is expected to include Medicare beneficiaries who:

  • Are enrolled in Medicare Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage
  • Meet certain BMI and/or medical criteria
  • Receive approval through a prior authorization process
  • Work with their physician regarding treatment and medical necessity

Eligibility may include:

  • BMI of 35 or greater, or
  • BMI of 27 or greater with qualifying health conditions

Important Things Medicare Beneficiaries Should Know

This program operates independently of traditional Medicare Part D coverage

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is considered a temporary demonstration program operating outside the standard Part D benefit structure.

That means:

  • Special program rules may apply
  • Prior authorization will likely still be required
  • Not every GLP-1 medication is included
  • The $50 cost may not count toward normal Part D out-of-pocket spending calculations

Existing Medicare Coverage Rules Still Apply

If a beneficiary already qualifies for GLP-1 coverage because of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, or another Medicare-approved indication, they may continue receiving coverage through their normal Part D plan instead. (many Part D plans do require a formulary exception to provide coverage)

More Details Are Still Coming

CMS has stated that additional beneficiary guidance and operational details will continue to be released as the program rollout approaches.

Why This Matters

Obesity and metabolic health concerns affect millions of older adults and can contribute to:

  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke risk
  • Mobility issues
  • Sleep apnea
  • Other chronic conditions

Until now, the high out-of-pocket cost of GLP-1 medications placed them out of reach for many Medicare beneficiaries.

While this new program is temporary, it represents a meaningful shift toward broader Medicare access to obesity-related treatment options.
